The history of Longarm quilting
Longarm quilting has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when quilters began using longarm sewing machines to create intricate and detailed quilting designs. Here are some key points in the history of longarm quilting:
1800s: The first longarm quilting machines were developed to help quilters efficiently quilt large bed quilts.
1980s: Longarm quilting machines became more popular among quilters as they offered more flexibility and speed compared to traditional quilting methods.
1990s: Longarm quilting gained recognition as an art form, with quilters using these machines to create elaborate designs and patterns.
2000s: Longarm quilting machines continued to evolve with the introduction of computerized systems that allowed for precise and intricate quilting designs.
Present day: Longarm quilting has become a staple in the quilting community, with quilters using these machines to create beautiful and unique quilts for personal use or for sale.
Today, numerous quilters opt to have their pieced quilts professionally longarmed, despite the cost. When taking into account the significant time and money invested in creating the quilt top, the decision to complete the quilt in a skilled and elegant manner can be seen as reasonable.
Personally, I have had several of my larger quilts finished in this manner and I can confidently say that they have proven to be worth the investment.
